Everything You Need to Know About Laser Hair Removal: Types, Pros, and Cons

Epilation is the most effective way to permanently get rid of unwanted hair. Unlike depilation (shaving or creams), laser hair removal targets the follicle directly, destroying it and preventing future hair growth.

How does laser hair removal work?

The method is based on the destruction of the hair follicle using a concentrated beam of light. Melanin (the pigment that colors the hair) absorbs the laser's light energy, which is converted into heat. This heat destroys the blood vessels feeding the bulb, causing the hair to fall out.

Main types of lasers

  • Alexandrite laser: Ideal for light skin and dark hair. It provides an immediate effect — hairs "burn" right during the procedure.
  • Diode laser: A versatile device that works well with various skin phototypes. It penetrates deeply into the dermis and effectively targets even coarse hair.

Pros of laser hair removal

  • Long-term results: After completing the course, smoothness is maintained for several years (with touch-up sessions).
  • No ingrown hairs: The laser permanently solves the problem of ingrown hairs and irritation typical of shaving and sugaring.
  • Minimal discomfort: Modern machines are equipped with powerful cooling systems, making the procedure virtually painless.
  • Saves time and money: In the long run, a laser course is more cost-effective than monthly expenses on waxing or sugaring.

Cons and limitations

  • Multiple sessions required: The laser only affects hairs in the active growth phase (anagen). Complete removal takes an average of 6-10 sessions.
  • Does not work on gray/white hair: The laser cannot "see" hairs lacking melanin (very light, gray, or peach fuzz).
  • Contraindications: Pregnancy, lactation, oncology, severe skin diseases, and fresh tans.

Preparation for the procedure

For the diode laser, hair must be shaved the day before the session (12-24 hours prior). If an alexandrite laser is used, the hairs should be 1-2 mm long. Two weeks before the session, avoid sunbathing, tanning beds, and plucking or waxing hair.
